Holy crap I can’t even believe what I’m writing right now. :crawls into box of shame:
I can say I’m also writing something for one of my prompts (thanks, twsakura) and thinking about another (magical poppets). I think I might set the latter during the 1980s and involve the second British Invasion and New Wave music. Does that sound messed up or what?
Stuff
So I started a fic that looked pretty good in the first chapter, a nice little adventure story, seemed decently written with some lovely descriptions:
Fic: Chapter 2. His eye popped halfway open and flicked at the other blonde and the two blondes’ eyes flicked at the sandy-haired blonde standing a few feet away etc. etc. etc. …
(I would swear that first chapter had been written by someone else …)
I know that writing is a journey, and that epithets and eye-flicking and popping seem like a good idea to many writers at first, but even ignoring the insertion of too many blondes, remember that eyes don’t flick and pop open, at least they shouldn’t. Such violent things happening to eyes in fics these days! Not to mention those creepy times when “his eyes roamed the other man’s body.” GET BACK IN YOUR SOCKETS, YOU NAUGHTY EYEBALLS!
Now, “gazes” can flitter or roam whatever, but it’s often nicer and uses a much better active voice to just say “they looked at him.” And instead of eyes popping open it should more accurately be the eyelids. I know it’s vernacular to say someone’s eyes popped open, but that’s more a fanciful observation by another character and not a POV character talking about him- or herself.

So over and over I get burned out on Hetalia and then get back into it … and you know, looking for stuff for pairings besides my OTP really helps. :) Like, I don’t follow Nordics much, but reading a really good Nordic fic makes me all “WOW THIS FANDOM IS SOOOO COOL.”
But of course I don’t know where to look for more Nordic fics. Anyone have any recs? I am open to pairings, but am partial to history fics, smut fics, and stuff without epithets if possible. :)

I guess we all have different opinions on the characters … as long as you don’t overdo any one thing, it’s all good!
